Treatments
Often clients will prefer a holistic approach with a full traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis, while other clients will have a certain treatment in mind or require something specific through ACC.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a holistic system of primary health care used by millions of people around the world. As a qualified and registered TCM practitioner, Greg offers a holistic approach to treating a client's health issues. This will include a diagnosis looking at symptoms, strength and speed of pulse, condition and appearance of the tongue, and lifestyle. Treatments can include any combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, tai chi & qi gong, cupping, moxibustion, acupressure, and diet & lifestyle advice. As the patient's condition changes and improves, the prescribed treatment is also adjusted until the desired health outcome is achieved.
ACC Treatments
Pirongia Acupunture is an approved ACC treatment provider. You will need an ACC claim number in order to book an ACC treatment. These are usually issued by your G.P.
Types Of Treatment
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the most well-known form of traditional Chinese medicine. Thin needles are inserted into specific points of the body, allowing qi energy to flow more freely through the body's pathways.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine involves the use of herbs and other naturally occuring substances to regulate and normalise body function. Traditionally these substances are simmered and the resulting liquid (decoction) taken as prescribed. Modern Chinese herbal medicine can also come in different forms such as pills, granules, powders, tablets, capsules, tinctures, ointments and plasters.
Tai Chi & Qi Gong
Tai chi and qi gong are exercise therapies that combine a set of movements with breathing to promote the movement of qi throughout the body.
Cupping
Cupping involves the placement of suction cups on the skin to draw stagnant or 'bad' blood to the surface of the body. The cups are either attached to a vacuum or heated.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a technique involving the burning of moxa (herbal compounds) close to the skin. It is often used in combination with acupuncture, as the moxa can be burned on the end of an acupuncture needle.
Tuina
Tuina is a form of remedial massage which is used to release blockages and restore normal qi flow.
How does TCM work?
Traditional Chinese medicine is based around the theory that when people are healthy, an abundant supply of qi (pronounced chee) or 'life energy' flows through a network of invisible channels within the body, called meridians. If the flow of qi in the meridians becomes blocked or is in short supply, the the body is suceptible to disease or illness because harmony, balance and order has been disrupted. Traditional Chinese medicine is used to encourage movement of qi, opening the meridians so that qi can flow freely again removing any stagnation in the body.
A holistic approach in TCM to understand disease processes, rather than just treating signs and symptoms. It focuses as much on prevention as on treatment. This is why practitioners pay particular attention not only to symptoms, but to other indicators of general health such as strength and speed of the pulse, the condition and appearance of the tongue, and lifestyle. This is the reason your qualified and registered TCM practitioner will deliver an individualised treatment.
